This April we will be watching Harlan County, USA, Barbara Kopple’s award-winning documentary on the 1973 Brookside Strike. The film recounts the fight of striking coal miners in Kentucky against the Duke Power Company, their scabs, snipers, and thugs, and the armed forces of the state. Kopple and her crew spent years with the families depicted in the film, documenting the dire straits they encountered while striking for safer working conditions, fair labor practices, and decent wages.
